Ice baths, saunas, red light, massage guns and pineapples. Here's what the studies say.

Confession: pineapple might be my favorite fruit. And yes, I eat it after training.
I kept seeing it sold as an anti-inflammatory recovery food. So I got curious: is that real, or am I just justifying my preference?
One search turned into a full rabbit hole. Ice baths, massage guns, saunas, tart cherry juice, magnesium, compression gear, red light panels.
So I built a tier list. 19 recovery strategies, sorted from most reliable evidence to least.

How I judged them
Every hack got four questions:
Does the evidence hold up?
Does it cost you something?
Is the promise bigger than the data?
Does it fit a real calendar?
What surprised me
Zero gadgets made it to the top tier.
Stretching is D tier: It might feel good, but studies found no real benefit for soreness.
The massage gun is also D tier: In one trial, foam rolling did better than the gun on muscle stiffness. And neither beat plain rest for pain relief.
Cold plunges can work against you. They help with soreness, but doing them again and again after lifting can slow down muscle growth.
And with pineapple? The research is on bromelain, a group of enzymes found in pineapple. It was tested as a supplement, 1000 mg a day, in 15 trained cyclists. That's not a slice of fruit. Sorry, pineapple. 🍍
Now the top
Two things sit in S tier. There’s no gear, so no affiliate links, don’t worry! 😅
One is something you do for hours every night, and the other is on your plate. If you're busy, I'd bet at least one of them is getting squeezed right now.
